Special Religious Education (SRE) plays an important role in the education of children in public schools. Students find this a caring and supportive place to have their questions answered, with additional support and care provided to students. At our two local High Schools, Warners Bay High and Belmont High, SRE continues to be taught to Year 7 students who opt in to lessons.

WARNERS BAY HIGH SCHOOL
Sara Cooper is employed 2 days per week to teach the students at Warners Bay High. This year there are currently 22 Year 7 students at Warners Bay High who have opted in to SRE. This number is expected to grow throughout the year. Increased funding this year would facilitate future expansion into Year 8 at Warners Bay High. Sara is faithful and continues to develop positive, Christ-focused relationships in the school, including within the staff community. These relationships develop from long-term commitment, with Sara now entering her tenth year at Warners Bay High. The post-COVID challenges continue, with teaching shortages across the school and re-structuring of the timetable. We are blessed in that this has not materially impacted on SRE classes. Sara continues to assist the school by helping with student welfare and care for staff. |
BELMONT HIGH SCHOOL
This year we have also added SRE at Belmont High School to our mission partnership. Samantha Brown is employed 1 day per fortnight to teach Year 7 students at Belmont High. Sam is married to Matt and they have 5 children. She also teaches SRE at Swansea High School and local primary schools. Sam has a heart to build meaningful relationships with young people and teach them about who Jesus is and how they can walk with him. At Belmont High Sam currently has 9 students in Year 7 and hopes for this to grow through the year as other students opt in for SRE classes. It is also on Samantha’s heart to teach Year 8 students and to hold a lunchtime group for students in the future. |
2023 Support
Both schools continue to look for more churches in the area to come on board with finance and support. There also continues to be resistance to SRE in High Schools. There is a great need to get behind this ministry with prayer, and to recruit additional churches to support the work.
